Job Summary

For the duration of the flight duty, the Captain is directly responsible for the safety of all crew members, passengers and / or cargo on board the aircraft. This responsibility begins with crew check in at the start of duty and acceptance of the aircraft and remains with the Captain until all crew members are reassigned or released from duty and the aircraft is accepted by ground staff or other operating crew.
The Captain has authority over all crew members for the duration of flight duty. Flight Attendants on duty are responsible to the Captain through the In Charge Flight Attendant. Crew members are expected to be available for duty in accordance with the published schedule. Consultation with the appropriate manager is required for medical/dental appointments or when undertaking activities which will limit availability for flight duty.


Key Areas of Responsibility

Leadership
  • Follow all Standard Operating Procedures and ensure a high degree of standardization is maintained;
  • Awareness of all the operational suitability and requirements of all aerodromes and routes served by the company;
  • Have a strong comprehension of the blocking rules, Terms of Employment (ToE) and all company policies;
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to the First Officers while assisting with upgrades;
  • Provide leadership to all crew members while operating.

Pre-flight
  • Examines all operational aspects of the intended route, destination and alternate;
  • Ensures that all navigation equipment, weather, charts and intended fuel loading are sufficient so that the planned flight can be made safely in accordance with regulations;
  • Ensures that the load carried is properly distributed and secured;
  • Ensures that the All-Up Weight of the aircraft does not exceed structural or performance parameters;
  • Ensures that aircraft is airworthy and has been released in accordance with company maintenance manual.

In-Flight
  • Ensures that the aircraft is operated in accordance with the Aircraft Operating Manual, Company Operations Manuals, Company Operational Policies and Government Regulations.
  • Ensures that all crew positions are occupied by qualified personnel;
  • Ensures the Journey Log Book is maintained.

Post-Flight
  • Ensures that aircraft defects are recorded and maintenance is advised of such.
  • Ensures that all appropriate forms and manifests are submitted to the company office;
  • Assists in securing the aircraft upon flight termination;
  • Holds final authority on all decisions regarding the flight and its safe operation;
  •  Ensures all crew members exercise their duties in accordance with Company operational policy, procedures and Government Regulations.

Safety & Regulatory
  • Assist with the investigation and corrective actions of Flight Ops SMS reports as required;
  • Ensure technical support of Flight Operations to ensure regulatory compliance and consistency as necessary;
  • Ensures pilot standards are maintained;
  • Responsible for the self-management of  own crew qualifications and licensing to ensure documentation is up to date and submitted to crew management;
  • Duties as assigned in the COM.

Other
  • Other duties as assigned to support the operation.

Education, Certifications and Work Experience
  • Captains shall hold an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) endorsed for the class and type of aircraft and be deemed acceptable to hold command;
  • Total flight time in excess of 5500 hours TT;
  • 1000 hours Pilot in Command (PIC) on EFIS equipped transport category aircraft or 1000 hours flight time on transport category jet aircraft;
  • Previous CARs 705 experience preferred;
  • Strong knowledge of the CARs;
  • Authorized to live and work in Canada.
  • Training experience will be considered as an asset.
