EHS Program Description:

Our Early Head Start offers comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income and underserved populations including expecting mothers, infants, toddlers and their families. In center-based as well as home-based settings we promote infant and toddler health & development, foster positive family relationships and supports parents as the primary decision makers and nurturers of their children.  Tools and learning strategies are employed to enable the children to enter school ready to succeed.

 

Infant/Toddler Teacher II

Brief Position Description:

Under the general supervision of the Education Services Manager and the direct guidance of the Early Head Start Site Supervisor, the Early Head Start Infant-Toddler Teacher II functions as a primary care giver for up to four (4) assigned children that are eight weeks through three years of age (including children with special needs). The Infant-Toddler Teacher II plans, organizes and conducts a full range of developmentally appropriate activities for the assigned children.  The Infant-Toddler Teacher II promotes each child's growth and development by creating and implementing a developmentally appropriate environment in which children can develop personal relationships, experiment, make choices, solve problems, and develop age-appropriate social and self-help skills.   The Infant-Toddler Teacher II works to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly physical environment; supervises all classroom activities; participates in parent education and shares responsibility for parent involvement.  The Infant-Toddler Teacher II may be assigned to a variety of classrooms/centers and tasks as needed to achieve program goals and to ensure regulatory compliance.

Essential Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Program Development
    • Prepares the daily lesson plans weekly and posts objectives for parents, volunteers and visitors to view in the classroom
    • Responsible for developing an individual plan for each child based on screening, assessment, parent input and observation; Plan includes objectives and activities to meet established goals (outcomes)
    • Responsible for scheduling, carrying out and documenting home visits and parent teacher conferences as required and as needed
    • Creates and maintains a healthy and safe learning environment that is developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive and experientially-based
    • Maintains strict confidentiality for EHS children, families and staff in accordance with established policies and procedures
    • Participates in transition activities including registration, classroom transitions and preschool transition
    • Collaborates with the education team, parents and policy council, to develop and maintain a meaningful, individualized curriculum that meets program goals
    • Works in partnership with other program staff to increase resources, accomplish tasks, resolve conflict and support the overall program
    • Actively participates in all required meetings, activities, pre-service and in-service trainings
    • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the EHS Performance Standards, licensing regulations, additional state requirements and SCF's policies and procedures
  • Infant/Toddler Program Implementation
    • Creates and implements a developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive program that supports the child's social, emotional, cognitive and physical development
    • Develops an environment that reflects the home culture of the families being served with the goal of increased understanding of their own culture and the culture of others
    • Participates in the development and implementation of a developmentally appropriate curriculum that integrates the educational aspects of the content areas
    • Displays positive guidance and discipline techniques that foster an atmosphere of acceptance that supports positive self-esteem
    • Promotes partnerships with families by working closely with colleagues and the family services staff
    • Understands 0-3 child development and applies this knowledge with infants and toddlers
    • Participates in IFSP meetings and/or staffing's for children with special needs Displays knowledge of safety issues relating to infant/toddlers (i.e. sudden infant death syndrome)
    • Organizes and maintains a healthy, safe, clean environment that ensures comfortable and challenging experiences that meet the changing needs of infants and toddlers
    • Follows authorized emergency and safety procedures and regulations concerning occupational disease, injury, prevention of contamination and other universal precautions
    • Promotes and supports the SCF's mission, standards and philosophy in the EHS community, with program partners and with the greater community
    • Conducts screenings and assessments as required
  • Non-Classroom Activities
    • Maintains a professional attitude and cooperates with colleagues and administration
    • Attends and participates in on-going infant/toddler training and professional growth activities
    • Understands and adheres to the HS Performance Standards, Standards of Conduct, Licensing and State regulations as well as SCF's Policies and Procedures
    • Develops/utilizes system to meet requirements for and track parent involvement in the classroom
    • Builds positive and productive relationships with families that focus on trust and support and encourage involvement in the EHS program
    • Co-plans and participates in orientation of new families
    •  Plans and facilitates monthly parent meetings at the center and other social activities for parents
    • Schedules, participates and ensures documentation of conferences, home visits, parent trainings and parent/family involvement activities
    •  Involves parents in educational activities that support their role as their child's first teacher, including volunteering in the classroom
    • Submits monthly in-kind records gathered from the parents in the classroom
    • Professionally promotes EHS in the community
    • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with collaborators

​Physical Requirements& Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds including infant and/or toddlers weighing 6 to 50 pounds continuously throughout the day, including diapering, feeding, changing and comforting
  • Must be able to able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, reach, stoop, and crouch to interact successfully with infants and/or toddlers throughout assigned work shift
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate specialized apparatus and standard office and classroom equipment
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work (conducting home visits 1-4 times per program year)
  • Tolerate some exposure to communicable diseases
  • Tolerate moderate to loud noise level
  • Some travel by car, bus, airplane or train may be required as associated with attendance at conferences, meeting and other duties carried out at distant locations in and out of state and in some cases overnight travel may be required

Job Requirements:

  • Requirements:
    • Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
    • Must have a minimum of a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential with a focus infants & toddlers
    • Must have ability to speak read and write English well enough to understand and be understood is necessary
    • Must communicate understandable ideas and instructions orally and in written format using English
    • Must have the ability to maintain written documents and records
    • Ability to read, analyze, understand, and interpret policies and educational materials in required
    • Must be able to communicate and understand infants/toddlers, their parents and other staff
    • Must have the ability to gather and interpret moderately complex information
    • Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide
    • Ability to exhibit patience and tact when communicating with children, families, staff, and supervisor is a requirement
    • Ability to project professionalism in appearance, interactions and conduct throughout daily activities is a must
    • Must acquire CPR/First Aid Training for Infant/Child/Adult within ninety (90) days of hire date and maintain through duration of employment
    • Must obtain a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Work Card (Sheriff's Card) for Child Care prior to hire date and maintain through duration of employment
    • Must submit negative TB results (One-Step Skin Test or Chest X-Ray ) prior to hire date
    • Must have a physical performed and document submitted prior to hire date
  • Preferred
    • Associate's Degree (or Higher) in Early Childhood Education or Child Development is preferred
    • Experience with infants/toddlers in a center-based setting is preferred
    • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
