The function of the Designer / Drafter is to produce, with little supervision, complete manufacturing drawings, solid models, and supporting documentation for equipment/systems to meet the needs of the Company.

Reporting to this position: None

  • Produce detail, layout and assembly drawings, using the SolidWorks platform so the designed equipment can be manufactured in a logical order and in a production-friendly manner. (85%)
  • Analyze critical interface between components and designs for appropriate assembly. (1%)
  • Perform component research to support the project design process.(1%)
  • Prepare bills of material for equipment/projects and manage revision levels.(1%)
  • Maintain and update CAD drawings to reflect changes and modifications in existing products. (5%)
  • Work directly with engineers and project managers to determine most logical and cost effective designs to meet requirements. (1%)
  • Enter job details for given project using manufacturing management software.(2%)
  • Schedule jobs through fabrication shop to maintain orderly and timely work flow.(1%)
  • Order materials needed to meet job requirements.(1%)
  • Work safely, following legislated, and Bedford Technology safety rules and practices.
  • Follow the Policies and Procedures of the company.
  • Input accurate time keeping and production records (1%)
  • Perform any other task or work assignment that may be delegated from time to time by a supervisor. (1%)

To take any reasonable action necessary to carry out the responsibilities of this position and maintain Engineering data integrity within established company policies and procedures.

Education: Some college, or minimum 2-year graduate of vocational or trade school with degree in related field of study. 
Experience: Five (5) or more years of solid modeling/drafting using SolidWorks in a manufacturing environment.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities:
  • Expert-level solid modeling ability with Solidworks and knowledge of Enterprise PDM system
  • Familiarity with ANSI Y14 drawing specification, and able to make compliant drawings
  • Associates Degree or equivalent
  • Machine/Mechanical background is preferred
  • Focused at work and posses ability to work independently
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to learn and operate in enterprise software system
  • Must be willing and capable of learning industry-standard machining practices, and also be capable of quick familiarization with various customer standards.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, preferably 2000 or above.
  • Sitting, walking, standing, and bending.  Standing, stooping and bending to inspect equipment within the production facility and to inspect quality details. 
  • Able to perform the necessary mathematical computations to meet project requirements. 
  • Able to plan work schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing with all levels of employees and management.

Primarily functions in climate controlled, smoke free office but will have occasional exposure to cold, hot, dirty, noisy and congested conditions typical of a factory environment.

  • Performs all duties in an independent and expeditious manner with minimal supervision
  • Scheduled completion dates for all projects are met.
  • The effectiveness of Good Housekeeping Practices as measured by the state of organization and cleanliness in immediate work area.
