ROLE
SMJV is recruiting for a competent, enthusiastic, and dynamic CAD / Drafting Technologist to support ongoing pipeline construction projects in Alberta and British Columbia. This role reports to both the Digital Design Lead, as well as project-based engineering teams. The CAD / Drafting Technologist prepares engineering designs and drawings, processes survey information, creates 3D models, and machine control files.

SMJV places engineering at the forefront of all our pipeline construction projects and are looking to appoint someone to this role who will assist in furthering development in the industry. Applicants with experience are preferred but training / pipeline career development may be provided for candidates new to the pipeline industry.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare project design/construction models and drawings, including, but not limited to: Access route plans, site & equipment layouts, trenchless pipeline crossings, open cut pipeline crossings, environmental mitigation drawings, lift plan drawings, steep slope construction drawings.
  • Create 3D models for the project right of way grading to maximise constructability and minimise material handling. Prepare project grade plan drawing sheets from the created 3D models.
  • Preparation and conversion of created construction 3D models for equipment machine control.
  • Process, manipulate and interrogate pointcloud survey information, leveraging feature extraction where required.
  • Produce project drawings in accordance with the company CAD Standard, ensuring that drawings are prepared, stored, issued, and archived in accordance with current company procedures.
  • Liaise with internal & external team members and design/project teams with respect to drawing requirements.
  • Follow checking and self-checking process, issuing drawings to internal and external clients, and managing electronic information.
  • Solve technical challenges and maintain and improve on knowledge of drafting techniques, standards, practices, and engineering procedures through the use Continuous Professional Development (CPD) techniques.
  • Display excellent time management skills to complete time sensitive deliverables.
  • Display strong analytical and problem-solving skills to understand what tasks are required.

Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
  • Completion of secondary school is required.
  • Graduate from an accredited college program in Civil Engineering Technology, CAD Technology, or from a career college in Engineering CAD / BIM Technology.
  • Genuine interest to develop and progress digital delivery with a propensity for learning.
  • Strong and professional verbal and written communication.
Experience
  • 3 years minimum previous experience in a similar role
  • Advanced Civil 3D skills with proficiency in corridor modelling.
  • Previous experience in corridor modelling for pipeline construction or highways.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of drone survey process advantageous.
  • Competent in the use of CADWorx, Autodesk Infraworks, ReCap and Plant 3D would be an advantage.
  • Working knowledge of pipeline safety regulations and standards.
  • Strong understanding of pipeline construction, design, techniques, and equipment is an asset.
  • Understanding of pipeline crossing designs & techniques – HDB, HDD, and Augerbore crossing design is an asset.
  • Field experience is an asset.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a permanent position based at our Calgary or Spruce Grove office with a 5-day work week, 40 hours per week. Site based work throughout Alberta and British Columbia will be required.  Project schedules will typically follow a 6-days on 1 day off shift working 12 hours per day.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The CAD/Drafting Technologist reports to Digital Design Lead along with functional reporting to project-based engineering teams.
