ROLE
The Project Engineer oversees and coordinates the project’s engineering function including the coordination, interpretation, and implementation of design, and delivery of expertise to the Project Management Team and project-based engineering teams. The position reports to the Engineering Manager and assists the Project Management Team with the planning and daily execution of the construction project. The position provides support to the Project Management Team by proactively managing the engineering and constructability of the project, assisting the Project Management Team in identifying work not covered by the subcontractor’s scope of work and budget and ensuring the success of office support functions related to the overall cost and scheduled completion.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review relevant project documentation to develop the deliverables required to be performed during the course of the works.
  • Maintain close contact with the Project Director, Project Manager, and all required subcontractors and consultants during planning to ensure plans contain adequate information and meet established schedule, cost, and productivity objectives.
  • Support Field Engineering Team and provide support for technical field construction issues.
  • Coordinate with the Engineering and GIS department to ensure knowledge transfer and maintenance of technical best practices.
  • Promote best practice in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the HSE department.
  • Take a personal interest in identifying, coaching, and developing junior engineering staff.
  • Provide operational, strategic, and contractual advice and service to bid preparation and project management when associated with design management and engineering.
  • Inform management of project engineering team activity and progress achieved.
  • Execute day-to-day engineering activities including assessment of permanent and temporary works design requirements and the appointment of suitable internal and/or third-party resources to satisfactorily complete the work.
  • Proactively identify and communicate resource requirements for project execution to the Engineering Manager.
  • Ensure that all changes in Client/Company standards are captured reviewed and briefed out to all project staff who have safety critical involvement.
  • Effectively allocate project resources to ensure optimum delivery and maximum return while managing risk.
  • Oversee that the project is constructed and documented in accordance with the contract documents and good engineering practices.
  • Assist with the scopes of work, RFI, change notice, and bid package development.
  • Help solicit subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Assist in managing and reviewing the progress of subcontractor’s construction schedules.
  • Provide technical support to Project Managers.
  • Develop and maintain project cost/change controls and project budget and accounting records.
  • Provide info and assist Project Manager in the preparation of progress reports/meeting minutes.
  • Coordinate and monitor schedule updates, invoices, and submittals.
  • Actively participate in subcontractor project orientation, project administration, coordination, and close-out.
  • Build effective relationships with customers, design team, subcontractors, and suppliers, that reflect and support company core values and meet or exceed the customer’s expectations.
  • Analyze and resolve field construction issues.
  • Participate in the preparation of construction schedules and milestones and monitor the projects progress against the established project schedule.
  • Track and report on project progress to plan.

Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical or civil preferred).
  • A minimum of 7 years experience in project engineering, design, construction, or other relevant roles is required.
  • Registration as a P.Eng. in good standing with either APEGA or EGBC is required.

Experience
  • Experience in project execution in the oil and gas pipeline construction industry is required.
  • Experience in energy facilities design and construction is considered an asset.
  • Experience in Steep Slope construction is considered an asset.
  • Experience in pipeline directional drilling, bores, and other trenchless crossing techniques is required.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Understanding of relevant construction codes and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead teams in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute in a safety critical role.
  • Ability to use own initiative.
  • Proven ability to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to read and understand relevant construction documents including contracts, drawings, specifications, subcontracts.
  • Knowledge of Pipeline construction design & construction temporary works design & management, including use of AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of GPS survey control, GPS Machine control, & Ditch design using AutoCAD.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This position is field based and often works within remote project locations. Travel and/or living in temporary accommodations is required.  Able to work 6 days on, 1 day off shift, with 12-hour shifts for the duration of project.
  • Office based work as required will be from our Calgary or Spruce Grove offices.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Project Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager. The position supports project management and construction teams.
