Community Clinic of Maui, Inc. dba Malama I Ke Ola Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and a fully integrated behavioral health, dental, and primary care system.  Billing Specialist
PRIMARY FUNCTION:  Serves as primary medical/dental Billing Specialist, responsible for activities related to billing, third party and patient follow up and customer service, ensuring optimal billing and follow up standards are maintained.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
  • Responsible for all patient phone calls and in-person/clinic interactions related to billing.
  • Conduct research, resolve and communicate patient billing discrepancies and adjustments.
  • Work with Member Services to communicate updated insurance demographics and sliding fee documentation and as well as assist front desk staff to help ensure patient demographic, insurance, sliding fee and proof of income (POI) is accurately entered/updated in the system.
  • Enter Medical Record charges in patient accounts.
  • Work closely with providers and other clinical staff to ensure accuracy of billing.
  • Maintain smooth patient flow.
  • Communicate as needed with insurance plans on billing issues.
  • Communicate information regarding patient billing activities and issues to the Controller and Finance Team.
  • Demonstrate ability to be viewed as a subject matter expert in their current role.
  • Organize work/resources to accomplish objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate personal responsibility for job performance.
  • Maintain relationships with health plans, healthcare providers, other professionals, coworkers and patients.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative team approach in activities.
  • Attends and participates in meetings, committees, and training sessions as directed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands: Frequent sitting at a desk for office work. Occasional driving of automobile for outside training and meetings. Occasional climbing stairs, stepstools; occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching and turning. Continuous use of corrected vision; depth perception; wide field of vision and color. Continuous use of olfactory, auditory and tactile senses. Occasional pushing/pulling to 100 lbs.; lifting up to 50 lbs. and carrying up to 25 lbs. Occasional use of wheelchair and other patient assisted devices for patient access into the clinic. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Equipment Use: Frequent use of telephone system and office equipment i.e. computer, printer, FAX machine, copier, and general office supplies.

Work Hours: Eight-hour work days with variable/flexible hours depending on patient needs. Overtime may be required.

Mental Demands: Duties require attention to detail, alertness, problem-solving, tolerance to stress, and exercising sound judgment. Also requires mathematical ability, scientific-logic, abstract thinking, and intuitive sense.

Communication Demands: Frequent conversing with public, patients, physicians, community agencies and professionals. Talking on telephone, training/giving instructions; receiving instructions and composing written language (English). Ability to work with diverse elements of Maui community and target groups including the mentally ill, alcohol and substance abusers, homeless and non-English speaking individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School diploma or GED. Business school or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Minimum one year experience in a medical/hospital setting and familiarity with medical terminology preferred AND/OR Medical Office Assistant Certificate.

Skills: Computer skills required. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required. Knowledge of use of adding machine, copier, fax machine, etc. Familiarity with Hawaii insurance, including managed care plans.

  • Negative TB clearance within previous 12 months
