Why This Job Exists:

Host will welcome all guests to the restaurants at Vanderbilt and seat guests accordingly. Assisting in steps of service as needed, and taking reservations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Pro-actively greet guests warmly and provide pleasant and comfortable arrival and seating experience.

  • Communicate effectively with servers and dining room manager to ensure flow of guests being seated moves as efficiently as possible, minimizing guests wait time.

  • Evaluate the dining status of seated guests in order to be prepared for guests yet to arrive.

  • Determine number of guests in party, if reservation has been made and determine the appropriate seating location based on established Vanderbilt standards for distribution of guests to servers.

  • Offer alternative times or dining locations if not able to seat immediately and pro-actively offer to call about securing those arrangements for the guest if able.

  • Maintain a current knowledge of menu items, basic ingredients and preparation methods in order to be able to answer guest’s questions.

  • Utilize computer systems to efficiently and accurately enter guest information and to collect payment from guests.

  • Provide a warm farewell and invite guests to return again soon.

  • Actively assist lobby guests with beverage services, offering reading materials, assisting with luggage as needed and greeting guests with anticipatory gestures(offering activities in and out of the hotel, directions to points of interest, inquiring on guests stay)

  • Complete required reports and paperwork to include closing out of registers after each shift as directed by supervisor.

  • Maintain room number and credit card information control and confidentiality.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Person Specification:

  • Prior hotel or equivalent guest service experience preferred.

  • Computer experience required, preferably in a hotel or food & beverage environment.

  • Exceptional ability to engage in friendly, polite conversation even if guest becomes upset.

  • Must speak clearly and understandably.  

  • Exceptional conversation and telephone skills.

  • Ability to maintain engaged conversation while using computer equipment.

  • Able to work on a flexible schedule, including week-ends and holidays, according to department needs.

  • Must be able to stand for at least 8 hours and be able to transport trays weighing up to 30 pounds.
