POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general supervision and guidance from the Automotive Maintenance Specialist of Wisconsin State Fair Park (WSFP), this position works in the onsite mechanic’s shop in the Facility Services Department. This position schedules and implements preventive maintenance on equipment to maximize their use and lifespan. This includes diagnosing problems, troubleshooting, and repairing motorized equipment. On a seasonal basis, this role assists with general snow removal operations, including plowing, and may operate heavy machinery as needed.


EMPLOYMENT TYPE
This position is an unclassified, Dual-Limited Term Employment (LTE) position within the State of Wisconsin employment system, working an average of 40 hours per week throughout the calendar year. Annual hours worked will not exceed 2,078.


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The starting wage for this role will be $18.00 to $20.00 per hour, based on qualifications. A comprehensive fringe benefits package, including a pension, health and dental insurance, life insurance, and disability insurance is available after a minimum employment period is met. Paid time off for vacation, holidays, etc. is not included as part of the benefits package per State of Wisconsin Legislature, s. 230.26(4), Wis. Stats.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair golf cart, mowers, and small-engine powered equipment
  • Perform preventive engine maintenance, including lubrication (greasing), engine oil and filter changes, air filter changes and engine coolant replacement on a variety of motorized vehicles and equipment
  • Troubleshoot conventional and electronic starting, ignition and charging systems as well as batteries
  • Diagnose, repair and replace engines and small-engine powered equipment
  • Tune-up gas and diesel engines, both standard and computer-controlled systems
  • Test vehicles and equipment to confirm completed repair

General tasks
  • Assist with seasonal snow removal operations at WSFP, which will require working late-night or early-morning hours
  • Safely operate machinery such as forklifts, skid loaders, front end loaders, aerial lifts, etc.
  • Recommend new equipment purchases to achieve desired results within Mechanic’s Shop
  • Communicate equipment repair status and work priorities daily to the Automotive Maintenance Specialist
  • Ensure a clean and safe shop area
  • Process work orders until completion within deadlines

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, engine diagnostic equipment and shop equipment, including hand, air, and electrical tools
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle and powered equipment drivetrains, including transmissions and differentials, operating principles, maintenance, problem diagnosis and repair
  • Ability to comprehend and apply technical information contained in maintenance and repair manuals, lubrication charts and other applicable publications
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply safe operating procedures and precautions for maintenance and shop repairs
  • Proficient manual dexterity and ability to properly handle tools and equipment
  • Ability to prepare and organize vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair records
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License
  • Must obtain SFP issued training certification in aerial lift, walking pallet, front end loader, forklift, and skid steer within 6 months of employment

SPECIAL NOTES
Candidate must be able to work all 11 days of the annual Wisconsin State Fair. Prior to appointment to this position, the candidate will be subject to a comprehensive criminal background check.
