UTILITY MAINTENANCE WORKER
PAY : $$33,627 MINIMUM ANNUAL SALARY (ENTRY LEVEL)

NATURE OF WORK
This position involves skilled labor and trades work, primarily focused on asphalt work and street maintenance, along with various construction and repair tasks that require the use of specialized tools and equipment. Responsibilities include the safe and efficient operation of equipment used in asphalt paving and maintenance activities. The work is distinguished by the level of skill required and the variety of tasks performed. Employees work under the general supervision of the Crew Supervisor and may be assigned to different crews as needed.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Collaborates with crew members on asphalt paving and street maintenance, as well as tasks such as placing and finishing concrete, repairing drainage structures, and maintaining water/sewer facilities.
- Assists in constructing and repairing wood structures.
- Mixes and prepares mortar; lays brick and block for headwalls and catch basins.
- Aids in planning and laying out construction projects and related activities.
- Sets up work zones for asphalt and street maintenance crews, and assists with traffic control at work sites by flagging vehicles as required.
- Contributes to snow and ice removal, storm cleanup, and other emergency activities.
- Operates medium to heavy equipment for various asphalt and street maintenance activities, including skid-steer loaders, rubber-tire loaders, motor graders, backhoes, dump trucks, and similar equipment.
- Performs related tasks as required, including assisting other crews when necessary.
- Ensures all duties are performed in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience and working knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in asphalt work, street maintenance, repair, and construction.
- Experience in the operation and servicing of heavy equipment related to asphalt paving, utility, or street systems, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles, including adaptations and specialized uses in emergency or unusual conditions.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in asphalt paving and equipment operation.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in using tools and operating equipment, including traffic, confined space, and personal protective equipment.
- Working knowledge of hand and power tools used in asphalt work, carpentry, masonry, and concrete work.
- Skill in the operation of hand tools and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to observe proper safety precautions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to drive and operate various equipment under varying or unfavorable conditions.
- Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints.
- Motorized vehicles and equipment, including skid-steer loaders, rubber-tire loaders, motor graders, dump trucks, and similar equipment.
- A variety of small hand and power tools, such as skill saws, chain saws, concrete saws, concrete floats, and finishing tools, jackhammers, and tamps.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors in various weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high places and is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock. The employee may be required to work at night during emergencies, in snow, ice, sleet, heavy rain, or windy conditions.
