Overview
An internship with the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office’s communications team will help you gain invaluable experience seeing the interplay between the criminal justice system and the media.

Interns will work directly with the Director of Communications and may be tasked with drafting press releases and media advisories, monitoring media coverage of the office’s cases in newspapers, creating a daily recap of online news articles related to the office and/or the office’s cases, assisting in the coordination of press conferences, staffing press conferences and other press events, staffing the District Attorney and other SCDA staff for interviews, creating and editing podcasts, and relaying information about ongoing trials to the communications team.

Requirements
The applicant must be a current undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field. The applicant must also possess excellent writing and research skills, as well as demonstrate an interest in criminal law and current events.

Interns will be required to work at least 12 hours per week, fully in-person, at our office in Hauppauge.

While possession of a driver’s license and access to a vehicle are not required, press events often occur in other locations than where the press team is located, so travel throughout Suffolk County is required. Utmost professionalism at the office’s press events is required.

Application Process
To be considered, applicants must fill out the electronic application completely, and attach the following:

  • Resume;
  • Cover Letter;
  • Unofficial School Transcript; and
  • Writing Sample.

The cover letter should be addressed to District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. In the cover letter, applicants must indicate what semester they are seeking to intern and explain how the internship will align with their career goals.
