Sacred Heart School is located in Warsaw, Indiana and has an enrollment of approximately 200 scholars from preschool to sixth grade.  Sacred Heart’s overall mission is to turn people from the mind of the world to the mind of Christ.  The school does this by building enduring relationships, getting the highest student achievement, and creating the greatest culture and climate - all through a Catholic lens.  

 

The SHS School Nurse reports to the SHS Principal and is responsible for:

  • Advancing the mission of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School by being the ideal team player - Fostering a cooperative relationship among faculty and staff, parents, and parishioners by communicating information, responding to requests, and participating in team problem-solving.

  • Assessing student health needs to develop appropriate care plans, including determining when sick or injured children should be sent home, seek follow-up medical care, and, if warranted, be referred for emergency transport to a hospital setting.

  • Treating student injuries, illnesses, and chronic conditions by providing appropriate standards of care, and conducting screenings.

  • Administering medicine as needed on an emergency and ongoing basis based on student needs.

  • Collaborating with parents, family physicians, teachers, administrators, and multidisciplinary professional staff to implement individualized student care, particularly for students with chronic conditions.

  • Providing physical and psychological support, advice, and referrals for care for students, staff, and families.

  • Meet RN Standards of Practice by contributing information to outside family medical professionals, providing care, and identifying system improvements as appropriate.

  • Identifying patient service requirements by establishing a personal rapport with student patients, teachers and school staff, families, outside medical service providers, and other people in a position to understand individual student health needs and service requirements.

  • Maintaining quality of care by adhering to staff policies and procedures, state board of nursing requirements, and other governing agency regulations, and measuring health outcomes against standards.

  • Maintaining the School Wellness Plan and other health-related reports as required by diocesan, local, state, and or federal agencies.

  • Establishing a compassionate environment by providing emotional and psychological support to students, families, and staff.

  • Promoting patients’ independence by establishing patient care goals and teaching and counseling students, family, and staff to reinforce their understanding of disease and self-care.

  • Maintaining a safe and clean working environment and maintaining and promoting hygiene practices in the nurse’s office, classrooms, and throughout the school.

  • Providing expert advice to administration, faculty, staff, and student parents and guardians on health-related matters.

  • Protecting students and staff by developing and interpreting infection-control policies and protocols and enforcing medication administration and storage procedures.

  • Maintaining documentation on student care services and keeping confidential medical information secure.

  • Ensuring operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, requesting repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.

  • Managing nursing supplies inventory by studying usage reports, identifying trends, anticipating needed supplies, and approving requisitions and cost allocations.

  • Maintaining professional and technical knowledge and certification by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing which will meet National Standards for School Nurse

  • Registered Nurse’s license through the Indiana State Board of Nursing/IPLA




Working hours & benefits

The SHS School Nurse would work primarily at Sacred Heart School.  The SHS School Nurse duties would take place between the hours of 7:30 am - 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.  Total working hours per week would be approximately 40 hours per week.
