PRIMARY FUNCTION
The primary function of the Pediatric MA is to provide pediatric providers and nursing staff by performing clinical and administrative duties to ensure efficient, safe, and compassionate care for pediatric patients from infancy through adolescence. Under the supervision of a licensed provider, the MA assists with patient flow, clinical procedures, documentation, and family communication in accordance with Louisiana state regulations and clinic policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Room pediatric patients and prepare them for examinations
  • Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, head circumference, and BMI
  • Collect patient history and chief complaints as directed
  • Assist providers during pediatric exams and minor procedures
  • Perform point-of-care testing (e.g., rapid strep, flu, COVID, urinalysis, etc.)
  • Administer medications and immunizations only if properly trained and delegated, in accordance with Louisiana regulations and clinic policy
  • Prepare and clean exam rooms between patients
  • Maintain infection control standards, including sterilization and proper disposal of biohazard materials
  • Observe patients for adverse reactions and report concerns promptly
  • Accurately document patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Assist with scheduling, referrals, and follow-up appointments
  • Prepare charts and ensure required forms are completed
  • Support clinic workflow to ensure timely patient throughput
  • Assist with prior authorizations and communication with pharmacies as needed
  • Answer phones and assist families with general questions under guidance
  • Provide age-appropriate, family-centered communication
  • Educate parents and caregivers on visit expectations, screenings, and follow-up instructions as directed
  • Demonstrate empathy, patience, and professionalism when working with children and families
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program preferred
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent) preferred
  • 1–2+ years of pediatric clinic experience preferred but not required
  • Experience assisting with well-child visits, school physicals, and immunization clinics
  • Familiarity with Vaccines for Children (VFC) program
  • Experience with Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) forms and reporting
  • CPR/BLS certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
