While "Environmental Services" can sometimes sound like a corporate term, in a setting like an emergency shelter or behavioral health unit, this job is deeply tied to the dignity and health of the people staying there.The EVS Associate is a vital member of the Rescue Mission of Trenton team. More than just a custodial role, this position is responsible for championing our "Culture of Clean." By maintaining a safe, sanitized, and welcoming environment. The position directly contributes to the dignity, health, and recovery of our clients and the professional excellence of our agency.
The EVS Associate plays a vital role in supporting patient/client safety, staff operations, and overall facility readiness in accordance with healthcare and behavioral health environmental standards.
Here is a breakdown of what this role typically entails and what you might want to consider if you're applying.
Working in a specialized facility like the Rescue Mission means your tasks go beyond standard janitorial work. You are essentially a guardian of public health within the building.
- Infection Control: Since you'll be working in the Behavioral Health Unit and Emergency Shelter, your primary goal is preventing the spread of germs. This involves high-touch surface disinfection (doorknobs, handrails, light switches).
- Sanitation & Safety: You’ll handle routine cleaning of residential rooms, restrooms, and common areas. You may also be tasked with specialized cleaning, such as responding to spills or deep-cleaning after a resident moves out.
- Regulatory Compliance: Facilities like these are often inspected by health departments or state agencies. You’ll be responsible for following strict protocols and documenting your work to ensure the building meets legal safety standards.
- Light Maintenance: This might include tasks like changing light bulbs, reporting broken fixtures, or moving furniture to prepare rooms for new arrivals.
- Campus Support: The Rescue Mission main campus is over 150k sq ft and Environmental Services staff assist in the maintaining of the campus which at times may require light landscaping assistance.
- Culinary support: With over 70 meals each day the Environmental Service Unit not only ensures that the kitchens are upkept and sanitized but also ensure that the serving of meals meet requirements.
In an emergency shelter environment, the physical atmosphere directly impacts the mental well-being of the clients. A clean, organized space:
- Reduces Stress: For someone in crisis, a clean room provides a sense of calm and safety.
- Prevents Outbreaks: In high-density living areas, your work prevents the spread of flu, COVID-19, or skin infections.
- Shows Respect: It sends a message to the residents that they are worthy of a high-quality living environment.
To excel at the Rescue Mission, you’ll likely need:
- Attention to Detail: Noticing the "small stuff" that others might miss.
- Resilience: You may be working around people experiencing difficult life transitions or mental health crises.
- Knowledge of Chemicals: Understanding how to use cleaning agents safely (following MSDS/SDS guidelines) is crucial for your own safety and the residents'.
FULL TIME: 32 hours - 40 hours per week. Must have weekday and weekend flexibility.
