About the Role
The Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) will act as a Senior Manager for AIHA with the primary responsibility of acting as a technical resource to AIHA staff in matters pertaining to the IH/OEHS profession. As our in-house subject matter expert (SME), this position also requires strong project management skills and an ability to work well across multiple departments and with the AIHA volunteer group community. This position will report to the CEO.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Act as Staff Liaison to multiple volunteer groups (approximately 55% of time), including but not limited to:
  • Total Exposure Health / Total Worker Health Advisory Group,
  • Defining the Science Advisory Group,
  • Academic Advisory Group,
  • Technology Initiatives Strategic Advisory Group,
  • Standards Advisory Panel.
As staff liaison, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Maintaining frequent communication with volunteer groups;
  • Evaluating opportunities for enhanced engagement and/or streamlining of initiatives;
  • Reviewing technical aspects of existing content and recommending experts in the field;
  • Using professional IH concepts to resolve complex analysis of existing, new, and emerging priorities;
  • Scheduling meetings, administering meetings, following up on action items;
  • Ensuring volunteer group output and association resources are aligned with AIHA Strategic Plan and other direction as provided by the Board of Directors and CEO.
Serve as SME for staff members (approximately 25% of time)
  • Assisting with Government Relations work;
  • Reviewing documents, submissions, proposals, postings to online platform, and other written information;
  • Acting as a content reviewer for our Content Portfolio Advisory Group (CPAG) to advance the development of educational and informational resources for the profession ;
  • Developing/managing budgets and strategic operational plans;
  • Developing/leveraging a network of peer contacts to stay abreast of important IH/OEHS issues and trends;
  • Communicating routinely with members and staff to disseminate information gleaned from peer interaction; Monitor OEHS emerging issues and provide staff and the Board with recommendations to further improve AIHA’s standing as THE source for technical information.
Act as Liaison with Outside Entities (approximately 20% of time)
  • Providing oversight and management of AIHA’s relationship with NIOSH, including leading semi-annual meetings and calls and keeping track of important deliverables
  • Working with the CEO with relationship building vis a vis other Allied Associations

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or an IH-related technical discipline; Master’s degree or higher strongly preferred
  • Required:
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    • Minimum of 12 years related experience and/or training
    • At least 3 years’ experience leading project teams
    • Proven ability in using and applying sound project management techniques in managing projects
    • Solid, general knowledge of industrial hygiene and occupational and environmental health and safety issues
  • Supplemental Experience:
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other related credential in addition to CIH
    • At least 2 years of previous association or non-profit experience, preferably in a scientific area
    • Experience working with an Association Management System (AMS) or other database

  • Be a quick learner who isn’t afraid of technology
  • Be able to work independently, manage groups of volunteers and co-workers, and establish/meet deadlines
Residency Requirement
Based on our business set-up and to maximize remote work opportunities, AIHA only employs individuals who live in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia. To be considered a candidate must live in, or be willing to relocate to, Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia.

Travel may be required for this position.
