Position Overview

Do you enjoy working outdoors? Are you interested in a career diverting food waste from landfills? We're hiring a Composting Operator to perform composting operations at our innovative on-farm Compost Outposts located in Maryland and Virginia. As Composting Operator, you'll work closely with our Composting Operations Supervisor to turn food scraps from our customer base into nutrient-rich compost. Primary location is Dickerson, MD, with regional travel to sites throughout the DMV. You will work 30-40 hours per week. This is a regular full-time position with comprehensive benefits eligibility. Compensation: $18 - $19/hr.

Responsibilities 

  • Assist in the construction of new Compost Outposts, including installation of supplies, equipment and site improvements
  • Perform weekly composting operations by following all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as specified in the Compost Facility Operating Plan (CFOP), including
    • Facility set-up and breakdown
    • Complete decontamination procedures
    • Complete proper material monitoring and mixing with temperature, moisture, porosity, and bulk density recommendations
    • Complete aerated static pile (ASP) inputs and outputs, as well as passive aeration windrow turning
    • Compliance with health and safety requirements as specified in the Health and Safety Plan (HASP)
    • Recording  composting operation metrics including feedstocks received, pile temperatures, Carbon to Nitrogen ratios, bay(s) used, moisture, working hours and notes
    • Compost sifting tasks and compost application/hauling
    • Maintenance of feedstocks including carbon feedstocks and nitrogen feedstocks (waste organics generated from our routing system)
    • Pre and post skid-steer checks and preventative maintenance procedures
  • Operate a skid-steer loader to perform compost mixing and movement tasks 
  • Operate and drive a truck and trailer for skid steer or compost transport
  • Perform assigned maintenance tasks for equipment and vehicles 
  • Comply with mandated certifications
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Key Requirements

  • Ability to travel to sites throughout region on daily basis (no overnight travel required)
  • Access to reliable transportation to and from regional sites - public transportation and rideshares services are not viable options given location of sites
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds up to 200 times per day
  • At least 2 years related experience in environmental field, such as composting, farming and education
  • Effective listening skills
  • Clear communication and organizational skills
  • Disciplined adherence to procedures, instructions and assignments when working in team and working independent
  • Capable of performing multiple tasks safely and effectively with minimal supervision
  • Access to cell phone for reporting and communications
  • Attention to detail
  • Flexibility

  • U.S-issued driver license in good standing
  • Clean driving record
  • Interest in becoming Compost Facility Operator (CFO) as certified by the State of Maryland or already CFO certified a plus
