CUSTODIAN PART-TIME (APPROXIMATELY 25 PER WEEK)
WORK LOCATION: PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY
RATE OF PAY: $12.00 PER HOUR
NATURE OF WORK
This is manual work in the care and cleaning of public buildings. Work involves responsibility for the efficient performance of a variety of custodial and minor building maintenance tasks of an arduous nature in and around public buildings. Work is generally performed in accordance with established procedures, but specific instructions may be given on unusual jobs or problems. Work is subject to inspection by the Building Maintenance Supervisor or the superior for maintenance of established standards of cleanliness and compliance with instructions.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Sweeps, mops, scrubs and polishes floors by hand or with machines; dusts, polishes, arranges and moves furniture and equipment; washes walls, windows, and woodwork; vacuums and shampoos rugs.
Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies; replaces light bulbs; cleans and polishes brass and other metal work.
May be required to operate a City vehicle.
Removes rubbish and waste paper from inside building and around building.
May direct temporary workers (prison farm laborers or community service workers).
Make minor repairs such as touch�'up painting, oiling motors, replacing filters; repairs minor plumbing malfunctions; checks equipment operation and calls repairman for more serious repairs. Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF WORK
Experience in general custodial or related work, experience in minor maintenance and repair work; high school diploma (or the equivalent) preferred; any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
Knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment and procedures.
Some knowledge of standard maintenance hand tools.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move commercial size garbage bags weighting approximately up to 50-60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. The employee must be capable of moving office furniture such as chairs, small tables, etc., necessary for cleaning; handling, carrying, operating commercial-type cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffer, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet with occasional exposure to noise created by air-handling equipment, electric motors, pumps, and floor maintenance equipment.
