JOB TITLE:  ASSISTANT REAL ESTATE ASSESSOR

NATURE OF WORK
Performs general real estate assessment and reassessment work on all real property, primarily residential; assists the public with real estate and mapping issues and questions; enters field data collected including photographs, measurements, drawings and calculations; takes and updates photos into permanent real estate records.  Reports to the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Real Estate Assessor.

  • Assesses new construction, real property changes, and revaluations during reassessment under direction of the Real Estate Assessor;
  • Monitors sales data to update statistical analysis of real estate market for valuation purposes;
  • Provides efficient and friendly customer service regarding real estate inquiries;
  • Maintains and enters collected assessment;
  • Does extensive field work and site visits as needed to verify all system data and arrive at a fair market assessment value for ad valorem taxation of realty;
  • Assists with conducting all assessments using International Association of Assessing Officers standards
  • Uses professional tools such as Marshall & Swift and MRIS
  • Takes continuing education courses in statistics or other assessment related topics
  • Assists the real estate assessor with field assessments;
  • Must be willing to enroll in course work to obtain or maintain state certification as an assessor;
  • Other real estate duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF WORK

High school diploma or equivalent with additional specific training in real estate assessment.  Preference given for completion of college level courses or degree in field of statistics and assessment of real estate or state certification in real estate appraisal.


WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to work a full 37.5 hours per week plus overtime if assigned.  Ability to use electronic equipment, telephones and various computers, data entry system and assessment tools.

Valid driver’s license is required.   Must report infractions or any violation of driver’s license within one business day to Commissioner of the Revenue.

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.  Walking, talking, stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, and sitting for long periods of time.  Some walking over uneven terrain, standing and lifting may be required.

Real estate assessor required to annually disclose statement of economic interest pursuant to Code of Virginia §2.2-3100.
