The primary function of the Central Sterile Instrument Tech assigned duties are to perform the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgical services department and ancillary departments as needed. He/She works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to provide safe patient care using aseptic techniques in assisting the surgical team before, during and after surgery.

Prepares operating room sterile trays and assists, as assist, operating room staff in pulling supplies per physician preference card as warranted by census.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- The Central Sterile Instrument Tech reports to the Surgical Services Director.
- In the absence of a Surgical Services Director, the Central Sterile Instrument Tech reports to the Charge Nurse or designee.
- Assigned duties are to perform the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgical services department and ancillary departments as needed per AAMI guidelines.
- Participates in maintaining a safe and clean environment.
- Monitors Air Flow, Temp and Humidity, Eye Wash Stations, Sterilizers, Endoscopic Scope Cleaner, Blanket/Fluid Warmers and Washer Disinfector.
- Performs Performance Improvement monitoring and provides documentation to the Surgical Services manager.
- Inspects equipment, instruments, and packaging for cleanliness, defects and/or malfunctions.
- Performs quality control through routine testing and cleaning to assure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly.
- Decontaminates, restocks, and assembles surgical trays.
- Assembles trays, basin sets, packages, instruments, and equipment and prepares items for sterilization.
- Cleans, repackages, and sterilizes instruments according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
- Sort, load, unload and decontaminate equipment and instruments according to manufacturer’s instructions for use. Maintains instructions for use manual in accordance with AAMI guidelines
- Collects dirty equipment and instruments.
- Displays knowledge of decontamination, packaging and sterilization of instrumentation and supplies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of supplies available to the unit.
- Follows through with appropriate disposition of equipment used.
- Displays appropriate skill in the use and maintenance of assigned equipment.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the use and care of equipment.
- Assist with maintaining cleanliness of the work environment.
- Follows appropriate infection control policies and procedures.
- Assist in performing and documenting environmental checks as required by administrative and OR policies and regulatory agencies.
- Certification in Sterile Processing preferred; non-certified are required to get certification within one year of start date.
- At least one year of Sterile Processing experience required.
