Using specialized skills in assessment, planning and treatment, Hand Therapists provide therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction, restore function and/or reverse the progression of pathology of the upper limb in order to enhance an individual's ability to execute tasks and to participate fully in life situations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Develops treatment plans and carries out treatment for patients. Monitors and documents progress as appropriate.
  •  Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as
                evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, and other such reports.
  • Prepares work schedule, assigns OT staff as applicable, evaluates peer work performance as requested by manager and makes recommendations for personnel actions relating to OT staff as requested.
  • Upholds established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department.
  • Ensures the delivery of quality therapy services for inpatients and outpatients by identifying patient needs and assisting in the development of quality therapy programs.
  • Consults with medical, nursing and administrative staff on a regular basis or as needed to coordinate patient care.
  • Communicates observations, facts and comments with interdisciplinary team members, individually, and through team meeting presentations as required.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, workshops and in-service meetings, etc.
  • Maintains personal, professional and institutional certifications and regulatory requirements by attending conferences, committee meetings, personal development opportunities and outside educational programs.
  • Performs Swing Bed activities assessments used to gauge patient’s individual interests and needs as needed.
  • Will monitor and over see participation in the activities program carried out by activity staff. 
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
  • Licensed Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist required
  • Certified and/or registered as a Certified Hand Therapist as required in the State of Louisiana required.
  • Previous experience as a Hand Therapist is preferred
