Position Description:

The Operations Manager will be responsible for the efficiency of the overall operation through proper planning, route scheduling, budgeting, vehicle management and executing initiatives for the local dispatch operation. They will have knowledge and experience to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, DOT, TSA security, CA DMV and Hazmat. This role demands strong technical ability to use the company’s applications (i.e., Samsara, Cargowise, security cameras) for managing key metrics within the team. You will be responsible for training, coaching, and successfully leading an effective team and have knowledge of the wage and hour laws for non-exempt employees.

A Day in the Life:
  • Lead day-to-day transportation and local cartage operational systems and processes that provide visibility into goals, progress, and obstacles for our key initiatives
  • Maximize overall operations efficiency, which includes route optimization, and providing the best utilization of personnel, assets, and technology
  • Understand and manage the department’s P&L
  • Monitor and provide leadership to the general operations of the transportation department to make sure that their operations are within the guidelines, safety measures, state and federal compliance, and company administrative policies while meeting customer needs
  • Responsible for the oversight of local cartage and vehicle assets including safety, inspections, cleaning, and maintenance as well as maintaining all such related documentation
  • Uses systems and technology (i.e., Samsara) to analyze key metrics and develop important indicators that measure the day-to-day performance of the transportation operations to ensure team efficiency
  • Supervises assigned team members, including but not limited to supervising, mentoring, hiring, overseeing orientation, training, discipline, motivation, team member evaluation, and termination
  • Work closely with Sr. Director on safety program and procedures
  • Use systems and technology to determine maximum routing optimization on a daily basis
  • Ensures shipments and overall department's activities are compliant with US DOT and Hazmat rules and regulations in accordance with the 49CFR
  • Research shipments and produce documentation on demand
  • Understand TSA regulations and operations, act as a liaison during audits, and provide backup to compliance manager as needed
  • Operate the camera security system to produce pictures or videos of specific dates/times as needed
  • Evaluate systems and procedures, identifying opportunities for process improvements
  • Supports and implements recommendations for improvement
  • Ensures the timely and effective completion of records and reports. This includes but is not limited to Fleet list/ assets, training records, company property distributed to employees, safety and utilization reports
  • Be responsible to maintain 98% and above KPI scores for local pick up/ deliveries. This includes the SF Bay area as well as managing our partners in Sacramento, Reno and Fresno
  • Collaborates with sales representatives to create and maintain customer billing profile
  • Assists in carrier negotiations
  • Serves as a liaison, networking with other branches, outlying agents and third-party trucking Companies
What we need from you:
  • BA degree required (preferable Business Administration) or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive transportation experience with roles of increasing responsibility, in the US Domestic freight forwarding/transportation
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills. Able to work effectively with all levels of the organization, internal and external customers and current/potential customers in the marketplace
  • Knowledge of CA Wage and Hour laws
  • Exemplifies outstanding leadership qualities
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication. Exhibits a high degree of professionalism
  • Exercises good judgment in resolving disputes or problems. Employs strong customer service skills
  • Able to delegate work assignments and follow up to ensure timely and accurate completion of all tasks
  • Exceptional organizational skills. Able to prioritize, multi-task and work independently.
  • Proficient at using computer systems and applications (e.g. MS Word, Office, Excel, CSP/Salesforce other IT applications as trained/required
  • Experience in Samsara software
