A Direct Support Professional position in Community Support provides an excellent opportunity for a creative and energetic person to work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in all areas of daily living skills and community involvement.  The Direct Support Professional positions are in residential (group homes) and the Direct Support Professional provides supervision, support and training to consumers in the program area they are assigned.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Provides assistance with activities of daily living
  • Provides individual training to and supervises individuals or groups of individuals in performing therapeutic activities that foster greater independence
  • Coordinates individual and group activities in the community and/or in a group home facility
  • Maintains records of consumers’ participation in and responses to training, treatment and everyday activities
  • Prepares materials for therapeutic activities and maintains an adequate supply of materials
  • Responds to consumer health issues as needed and directed through individual plans of care
  • Provides a safe environment for consumers when in their care including behavioral as well as medical issues
  • Performs related work as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Essential Functions

  • Excellent written communication and computer keyboarding for inputting documentation
  • Excellent verbal/telephone communication with consumers, staff, and community providers
  • Organizational and filing skills and time management needed for maintaining records
  • Stooping, bending, sitting, standing for prolonged periods and lifting 50-75 pounds
  • Ability to be CPR and PMAB certified
  • Valid Texas driver's license, liability insurance, and reliable transportation required

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 6 months work experience with individuals with developmental disabilities strongly preferred
  • Valid Driver's License and proof of Liability Insurance Required
