Manufacturing Lead Back-up
Under the direction of the shift or area supervisor, lead the process and equipment setup for production in a safe environment for hourly employees, while producing a high-quality product according to daily production requirements from processing to packaging (PRDIN-PRDOUT).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (other duties may be assigned as needed):

  • Ensure and motivate employees to work together to maintain quality control and high productivity levels. 
  • Establish good working relationships with all employees.
  • Oversee all production workers, safety rotation, supplement staffing gaps, break and lunch rotation coordination, production machinery and activities to meet or exceed all production goals.
  • Direct production workforce such as but not limited to line crewing, line crew balancing and re-assigning employees to different work areas/job tasks based on daily production requirements and priorities.
  • Responsible for production orders coordination including changeover & split orders. Responsible for implementing and executing efficient changeovers by enforcing teamwork and having multiple employees assisting to reduce downtime during this process.
  • Meet and exceed all production goals, including but not limited to yields, downtime, schedule attainment, product waste and production schedule attainment.
  • Complete routine reports, logs, forms assigned to include but not limited to down time reports, paddle usage, knife usage, wholeleaf pre-wash setup, Springmix usage, plant trial, weight control assessment, etc.
  • Daily interfacing with quality assurance technicians, production machine operators and maintenance personnel on assigned production lines.
  • Comply and follow established guidelines for quality and safety including all company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness of production areas and in compliance with GMP and human safety policies and procedures.
  • Enforce that assigned employees comply with our company human safety, food safety, GMP, quality and production policies and procedures.
  • Attend and participate in training. Assign mentors to new recruits or employees in cross training as needed based on individual skills, capabilities and experiences.
  • Participate in execution of daily tailgates, company communications affecting or pertaining to the union employees.
  • Enforce and adhere to Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
  • Manage and comply with seniority per CBA as it applies or pertains to the union employees such as but not limited to work areas de-crewing.
  • Perform daily attendance check utilizing company provided rosters. Mark employees who are absent. Utilize roster for seniority check.
  • Ensure that lines setup is done accordingly at the start of shift and perform inspection of work areas and equipment throughout the shift.
  • Daily perform pre-operational safety inspection and submit completed paperwork to the manufacturing supervisor.
  • Ensure materials and supplies are available to support nonstop daily line operations.
  • Maintains a quality service by helping to establish and enforce organization standards.
  • Completes production plan by analyzing schedule before execution. Monitor production flow on an hourly basis and measures results against key operating indicators.  Promotes root cause analysis to correct issues and establish priorities.
  • Report any food safety incidents or concerns to quality assurance immediately such as but not limited to material contamination.
  • Report quality issues, concerns or incidents to quality assurance.
  • Report any unsafe conditions, acts, injuries, near misses to manufacturing supervisor.
  • Ensure operation of equipment by calling for repairs to maintenance. Safeguards operations by measuring down time and enforcing food safety practices by following Sanitation requirement before re-starting operations after repairs or line incidents have taken place.
  • Operate manufacturing equipment including but not limited to blending equipment, vision sorters, automated wash/dry lines, non-powered pallet jacks, blending & packaging equipment, etc. Perform adjustments as needed to achieve premium quality with highest raw yields possible.
  • Distribute production schedules, wash and pack orders to production employees who require the information to execute.
  • Provide employees with work instructions such as, but not limited to blend sheets, raw materials to use, head items trimming technique, proactive and reactive defect mitigation, etc. Review throughout the shift if employees are following and adhering to work instructions.
  • Review that assigned employees are following packaging techniques to minimize waste.
  • When there is an evacuation order, lead employees to assembly area & run attendance list to ensure all assigned employees arrive safe.
  • Accurately consume raw materials into designated wash orders and blending lines by utilizing handheld scanner. Manually document transactions in Springmix usage log and verify that all transactions went through in business central under batch reporting. keep accurate traceability of raw product used in the blending area.
  • Update freshness date during production and the execution of split orders in business central.
  • Accurately receive finished product in the packing area by using a handheld scanner and keep accurate accountability of packed products. Execute corrections as needed such as but not limited to use by date errors or output errors.
  • Report errors, discrepancies or any issues to supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Execute plant trials per work instructions and document required metrics as directed.

DIRECTLY SUPERVISES:
  • Supervise production workers and activities in assigned production area.

  • Adhere to GMP’s in accordance with company policy.
  • Adhere to Safety & Health General Rules Policy.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent from an accredited institution preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a manufacturing plant preferred but not required.
  • Must possess good record keeping skills, accuracy and very highly detailed oriented.
  • Job requires use of equipment such as a computer, handheld scanner, and general office equipment.
  • Proficiency must be demonstrated in data input and Microsoft Excel with the ability to troubleshooting computer applications.
  • Knowledge of inventory rotation procedures (FIFO).
  • Basic and intermediate knowledge in Microsoft business central.
  • Must be able to differentiate different units of measurement.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Literate in English and or Spanish. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Must be able to provide basic work instructions in English.
  • Understand and carry out verbal and written instruction.
  • Ability to read, write and interpret work related documents and written work instructions, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures.
  • Must be able to read, follow and adhere to work instructions in English and Spanish.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Basic math skills with demonstrated ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers to assure proper inventory counts and fulfillment of customer orders. Demonstrated ability to calculate proportions & yields.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • Must be able to provide proof and eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Pass pre-employment drug screen required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to work in a food processing plant.
  • Prior experience in a fresh vegetable or food processing plant a plus.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must be a current member of or willing to sign up with the Teamsters Local Union No. 890.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be regularly exposed to cold temperatures of 36 degrees and occasional heat when working inside/outside the production facility.  The employee will be working inside a production facility where the use of chemical substances is present. Employees’ work is also subject to the pressures of time constraints and deadlines. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and high if the individual enters the food plant.  May participate in safety inspections in on/off sight locations, which are located both in a warehouse and administrative office environment.
