Certification/License Requirement: If not certified as youth peer support, training may be provided.

 
Duties/Responsibilities:  
Youth Peer Support will work at Walker House CCSU. The shifts are 12 hours. They will be expected to maintain safety and cleanliness of the unit, meet with youth in crisis to aid in their ability to improve their mental health. This position delivers support to consumers and providers in the Crisis Residential Recover Unit (CRRU) and Children's Crisis Unit. The position observes the consumer to monitor safety, assist in proper medication self-administration, handle telephone contacts for CRRU crisis line and Mobile Crisis services including documentation of crisis calls (in Ashland Location); ensure and check proper admit and discharge paperwork of consumers. The position is responsible for monitoring vitals, bed checks etc. Position will assist in resolving immediate crisis situations. Individual will complete 40-hour crisis training. Position will transport clients at times for needed services. 

The YPSS will be responsible for the provision of individual and group support to youth and young adults, serve as a role model for clients by sharing own recovery process and teaching effective coping techniques and self-help strategies. YPSS will advocate on behalf of consumers and inform supervisor of issues/concerns related to individual consumers.
 
Skills/Knowledge:    
The family Support Staff must possess a philosophy and a willingness to work with the severely mentally ill and those in acute crisis situations.  They must possess a willingness to acquire the knowledge/training in the field of mental health/substance abuse that is necessary to perform job responsibilities as related to crisis management. They must possess the personal philosophy that those individuals who suffer from long term mental illness can improve and develop necessary skills that will allow them to function independently. they must be proficient in written and oral communication. 
Youth Peer Support must be a consumer of mental health service as a youth (lived experience). Experience in collaborating with inter-agency teams. Must become knowledgeable in System of Care, care planning, wrap around services, cultural competence, evidence-based practices in mental health and adolescent substance abuse.
