Position Summary

Pathways is seeking a dedicated and community-focused Prevention Specialist to empower communities and build capacity for substance abuse prevention efforts. This position works collaboratively with key individuals, coalitions, schools, organizations, and community partners to implement evidence-based prevention strategies using the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF).

The Prevention Specialist provides training, technical assistance, and support to strengthen local prevention initiatives and promote healthier communities.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Utilize the five steps of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to support community prevention efforts:
 

SPF Step 1: Assessment
  • Profile population needs, resources, and community readiness.
  • Identify prevention needs, gaps, and priorities through data collection and analysis.

SPF Step 2: Capacity Building
  • Mobilize and strengthen community coalitions and partnerships.
  • Engage stakeholders and build community support for prevention initiatives.

SPF Step 3: Planning
  • Assist in the development of comprehensive strategic prevention plans.
  • Establish goals, objectives, and evidence-based strategies to address identified needs.

SPF Step 4: Implementation
  • Coordinate and support evidence-based prevention programs, activities, and campaigns.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to community partners and stakeholders.

SPF Step 5: Evaluation and Sustainability
  • Monitor and evaluate prevention efforts and outcomes.
  • Support continuous quality improvement and sustainability planning.
  • Recommend improvements or replacement of programs that do not achieve desired outcomes.

Education and Certification Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Degree in Human Relations, Prevention, Public Health, Social Services, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Must obtain Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) certification within 24 months of employment.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications and data management systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse community partners.
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Additional Requirements
  • Must be willing and able to travel for training, meetings, and job-related responsibilities.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed for community events and trainings.
